Mt. Airy Elementary School 5th Grade Classes
Carroll County Public Schools
STEM Coordinator, Bryan Shumaker
Date: October 30, 2018, June 6, 2019
Description: Fifth Grade students came down to help us maintain the Pollinator Garden and also the Insectary. Bryan Shumaker, (Coordinator of STEM, Curriculum and Instruction) lead the fifth graders at MAES in identifying weeds and plants that remain in our two large gardens. The fifth graders worked hard to remove weeds and trim back other plants that needed to stay. A few classes at a time walked down to Parr’s Ridge and worked for a few hours each session. |
Partnership with Carroll County Outdoor School
Date: February 2019
Carroll County Outdoor School purchased a bulk amount of cedar wood to build Bluebird boxes. They shipped the wood to Shiloh Middle School, where the Tech classes created Bluebird box kits. The kits were then shipped back to Outdoor School and assembled by their Sixth Graders. The Outdoor School donated five Bluebird Boxes, to not only replace older broken boxes, but also to add to our trail. |
“LANDFILL” Labels for Trash Cans,
Partnership with Carroll County Public Schools
Career and Tech Center
Date: May 2018
We reached out to the Print Production Center at the CCPS Career and Tech Center. A student at Career and Tech, gave us a quote and produced them for us. They cut 35 vinyl stickers for us to distribute to teachers at Parr’s Ridge to place on their tall grey trashcans. Teachers were given detailed directions to apply the label on their classroom trashcan. Students discussed the stickers in their classrooms and are more aware of throwing away trash, and are aware that what they place in those trashcans will end up in a landfill. |
