Summer Workdays
August 2019
This summer, we hosted 2 Workdays to invite students, parents, staff and community members to help us maintain our Pollinator Garden. On August 4th we focused to removing weeds. Some Parr's Ridge students participated along with Mt Airy Middle and High School students who were earning Student Learning Hours.
On August 14th, we invited 2nd and 3rd graders and also Middle School students to attend. Our goals were to remove the weed blocking fabric, continue weeding and plant native plants.
They were both very productive days!

Bluebird Webcam and Boxes
Date: Spring 2019
Grade: Afterschool Green Club Description: Our school received a grant for a “Bluebird Infrared Webcam Nestbox”, through the Mount Airy Garden Club in 2012. Students at Parr’s Ridge have enjoy watching the Bluebirds lay eggs and watch as the baby Bluebirds emerge. We often see two separate fledglings in our Bluebird nests each year. Our After school Green Club students participated in maintaining the current Bluebird boxes: cleaning out old nesting materials, installing “Sparrow Spookers” (a deterrent for sparrows to make nests in the boxes). Teachers coordinated with CCPS IT Department to insure proper functioning of the webcam feed. |

Kindergarten Monarch Garden

Grade: Kindergarten Teachers: Heather Conaway, Linda Black, Patti Hultquist, Janelle Creighton, Allyson Sealfon, Kim Dunn, Mary Schmidt Description: Our Monarch Garden in the front of the school is thriving! Each year, we find several monarch eggs, and caterpillars that we are able to observe outside and also bring into our classrooms. The students observe them and watch them grow. Our kindergartners were also able to find more than one chrysalis around the school grounds. We kept checking each chrysalis and were excited to find them empty after the monarchs had emerged! New milkweed seedlings, grown in Mrs. Schmidt’s kindergarten class from seeds, will be added to our monarch nursery in the Spring. |

Seed Germination
Date: February 2019
Teacher: Mary Schmidt
Grade: Kindergarten
Description: Students in Mrs. Schmidt’s kindergarten class observed various types of seeds. They tried to match the seeds with the grown plant. They then prepared the seed pods and planted seeds in a tray. Once the seedlings grow large enough, the students will plant them in our Parr’s Ridge flower beds. Students planted 2 types of milkweed and zinnias, which were harvested from our Monarch garden and will be replanted there. They also planted Coleus, Gerber Daisies, Lupine and Pineapple Lilies, which will be used to attract butterflies.
